This new 4,000 square
foot dental clinic represents the commitment of its
owners, Drs. Randall and Karla Rothfus, to
state-of-the-art, high-tech dentistry. Responding to the
project's location on an inside corner lot of a larger
office development in Ashland, Oregon, the design
features a tapered vertical tower designed to draw
attention from surrounding buildings and toward the
building’s exposed steel entry marquee. Steel tube-shape
beams and columns further emphasize the beauty of the
structure rather than applied ornamentation.
The vertical tower not only provides a focal point for
the design, but also acts as a counterpoint to the
stucco cladding, exposed structural elements, and
galvanized metal roofing. Together with the hipped and
gable roofs, the vertical "water tower" reflects forms
and materials found in the agricultural vernacular of
the rural Rogue Valley, assembled together to create a
visually modest yet "edgy" design.
